Nonprofits have a unique challenge of not only spreading the news of their causes, but also igniting hearts and minds.

If you have experience with a nonprofit organization, or are working to grow your own, what is your single best strategy for earning brand recognition/trust AND raising funds to advance your cause?
My thanks to Sheryl Hill of ClearCauseFoundation.org for recommending this question, and to all our great contributors for sharing so many outstanding strategies! If you are a nonprofit looking to sharpen your competitive edge or a new organization working hard to gain traction, I hope that you will find some helpful and profitable strategies below. Performance Tip of the Week
When the idea of starting your own business first took root in your heart, you may have experienced fearful hesitation about sharing the exciting news with certain people in your life.
Why?
Because some people fall into the category of the spirit-sucking, dream-crashing, naysayers. Their comments, sometimes laced with tinges of sarcasm, may come from a place of sincere desire for your well-being, but more often are the result of your spotlight highlighting their own fears, faults, and self-imposed limitations. “Can you get publicity on a shoestring budget?”
Question: “What are the guidelines for publicity (go for broke, bet the farm, or be conservative/fearful) for shoestring start-ups on the web?”
– Jennifer Little, Parents Teach Kids, North Bend, OR.
Shannon’s Answer: Jennifer, thank you for your great question! I am excited to share some information with you that will be music to your ears. When it comes to publicity you don’t have to bet the farm or be fearful because it won’t cost you penny, just some good old-fashioned effort.
Publicity is free media exposure for your business, expertise, products, and services. Traditional advertising efforts require you to spend money to spread the news about your business. So when faced with a shoestring budget, why not learn the ropes and develop relationships with media outlets that are already catering to your target audience, and get them to sing your praises for free? This week I am excited to share my “overseas” interview with Dr. Monique Y. Wells, Founder of Understanding Time Management.
In our interview Monique shares…
- How she reinvented herself when the market fell out from beneath her main business,
- Why when starting a business you must be crystal clear about your direction before moving forward,
- The importance behind establishing a support network for her solopreneur venture before she branched out on her own,
- And how lack of prioritization is one of the biggest obstacles that holds women back in business.
One of my favorite parts of the interview was when Monique shared that experiencing overwhelm is not a character flaw. The important thing is how you deal with it. Be sure to scroll to the bottom of the page where you can link to her free video training program, and register for her upcoming six-week Getting Over Overwhelm mentorship program. Enjoy!

Performance Tip of the Week
It’s one thing to jump into the business game. The challenge is staying in it at an effective level.
As business owners, we often talk about how it’s difficult to be a one-person extravaganza. It’s true. You must attend to so many details all the time that it can become taxing, and at some point, completely overwhelming if you lose your focus.
You have the desire to keep pace with the flow of business, and to find ways to push beyond your competitors. That’s why you are in business — to succeed. But when your head is not in the game, you wind up feeling like you are getting dragged behind the bus, instead of driving it.
