Being a Killer Without Sacrificing Who You Are

Do you crave success?  Are you unwilling to settle for mediocrity in your life and career?   If you answered yes to both questions, what are you doing about it?  Anything?

Recap –

In my previous post, A Killer Instinct Can Still Be Pretty, I addressed the issue of the killer instinct in women, traditionally considered a male characteristic.  Tapping into that desire for greatness does not make you any less of a woman, despite what society might have to say about it.  What it really boils down to is deciding whether you have the guts to be exactly who you are and go after what you want regardless of what anyone else thinks.

Traditional killer modus operandi –

Am I giving you license to step all over people in the process?  Definitely not!  There are far too many examples of the “kill or be killed” approach to competition.  According to Ben Casnocha, “Everyone wants to win and kick the competition’s ass, the question is how this spirit should manifest into entrepreneurial truisms.” I was refreshed by Jeff Nolan’s reply to this question because he illuminates the fine line between winning at any cost and respectfully being a worthy advisory in business –

I used to need an enemy I could hate… that business was a zero sum game where I only won if everyone else lost. Then I grew up…[You’ve got to] respect your competition because if you don’t you can’t learn from them. Remember that you are primarily competing against yourself…you have competitors that you will sell against, but you won’t really win if your only strategy is to attack your competitor. This leads to perhaps the most important piece of advice, compete fairly because your customers will judge you based on how you compete.

Women stand in direct contrast to a lot of men in their ability to fight for the brass ring without decimating the field in the process.  Not all men fight ruthlessly, but I think women more intuitively understand the emotional cost of battle.

Maximizing your instinct –

If you have determined that honing your killer instinct is just the edge you’ve been missing in your business, I’d like to share some strategies you can begin using today to leverage the lioness in you.

  • Take a hard look in the mirror. Be willing to make changes in your life in order to succeed.  Do your attitude, self-perception and vision scream “worthy opponent,” “force to be reckoned with,” “trail blazer”?  Don’t change who you are, just start believing in what you’ve got to offer.  If you have to, fake it until you make that mental and emotional connection to your gifts.
  • Keep raising the bar. Study the best professionals in and out of your niche.  More than likely they know something you don’t.  Learning from others is a sign of strength and wisdom.  Hone your skills by becoming a student of life, for life.
  • Choose the action zone, not the comfort zone. Be committed to grow even beyond your vision — stretch outside your comfort zone.  You’ll never know how great you can be and how much you can achieve if you never dream or push beyond your present reality
  • See the value in every experience. There are no mistakes in life, just lessons.  Being able to see opportunities in every obstacle is a skill worth mastering.

Successful women know how to unleash their killer instinct in focused, calculated and measured doses.  By doing so, they never compromise who they are as women.

Entrepreneurs come in all shapes, sizes and colors. Despite the many different types, they all joined the ranks and do what they do every day for powerful reasons.

Last week I asked the question —

“Entrepreneurs, why do you do what you do? What is your motivation to sacrifice willingly, invest completely and risk everything?”

A Killer Instinct Can Still Be Pretty

What is a Killer Instinct?

Your mind may immediately jump to an image of an attack trained salesperson, ready to take down the opposition, no matter the cost — “backstabbers par excellence.”  That’s the epitome of a killer instinct on crack:

“a strong will to win and an urge to succeed unmindful of the consequences for others.”

“History is pretty clear on the fact that most great men (and women) are bastards.”

“A person with killer instincts sees an enemy where others don’t see anything…”

The good news is that you don’t have to morph into a monster to leverage a killer instinct. There are many examples of successful, competitive women (Chris Evert & Martina Navratilova, Oprah Winfrey, Jessica Herrin, Ali Brown) who do not subscribe to the win at all costs way of life.

Nature or Nurture –

The killer instinct isn’t something you are born into, nor is it synonymous with your gut. It goes beyond the fight or flight mechanism, motivating you to performance levels above the norm. It’s a mindset that’s developed through your experiences overcoming adversity.

If you want to achieve greatness. This killer instinct, this “I’m-going-to-blast-through-anything-that stands-in-my-way” mindset will propel you there. It will drive you to acquire any skills you do not already have… this killer instinct IS within you… You just need to utilize it.

Can I be a “killer” and still be pretty?

The killer instinct is traditionally considered a male characteristic. Does that mean that women can’t have the same drive and insatiable craving for success? Absolutely not! It’s becoming increasingly more evident in the way women are competing in athletics and in business. But the double standard is nearly as strong as it was depicted a decade ago —

Female politicians, lawyers and businesswomen of all ethnic groups also play the femininity game. Like tennis players in short dresses, working women seem to believe it’s an asset to look pretty (but not too pretty) while throwing themselves around. The female apologetic is alive and well in corporate board rooms, where women say, “I’m sorry, maybe someone else already stated this idea, but…” and smile while they say it.

…So if you want to be a winner and you’re female, you’ll feel pressured to play by special, female rules. Like men, you’ll have to be smart and industrious, but in addition you’ll have to be “like women”: kind, nurturing, accommodating, nonthreatening, placating, pretty, and small. You’ll have to smile. And not act angry. And wear skirts. Nail polish and makeup help, too. – from the Women’s Sports Foundation

Yuck! Where’s the crime in simply being just who you are and going after your dreams?! The fact that the “fairer sex” is still colored unwomanly for demonstrating “the willpower to face down every last obstacle and confrontation in the way of [their] success” is simply intolerable — fortunately it’s not stopping all women from going after what they want. It’s these brave trail blazers you need to watch and emulate, and the ones whose horns I will be tweeting. Who are you following?

There is a balance that doesn’t require you to be a complete bit#% to be a “killer” competitor. My next post will round out this topic by presenting strategies you can use to develop the killer instinct within, without sacrificing who you are in the process.

Tip of the Week – Nov 3, 2010

Live daily in the precious present. Getting bogged down in the past or too far ahead of yourself in the future will only keep you stuck and unhappy in no-woman’s land.

Step Aside Cirque du Soleil Jugglers

Entrepreneurs, especially mompreneurs, have the ability to rival even the best jugglers, the likes of those you would pay big bucks to see performing for Cirque du Soleil.  Did these ambidextrous women go to clown college to master the art of spinning plates atop long poles or handling fiery batons without singeing a single eyebrow?  Well, there might be a few (but only those who dreamed of one day touring with Ringling Brothers) — but most businesswomen grow into the role of master juggler by simply having to maintain control over ever-increasing responsibilities at work and at home.

When you get exactly what you asked for –

Women asked to have it all, and got what they asked for.  Is this bad news? No.  But it requires them to continue to set new rules for how to run businesses and still maintain that much needed balance that drove them to become entrepreneurs in the first place.  But the big question remains — “how are we supposed to do it all without sacrificing our children, our careers, our marriages, or ourselves?”  I love Donna Estes’ post on this subject:

We need to unite our strengths and become mindful and proactive in not supporting anything or anyone who undermines our respect, our careers, our marriages or our families. We have to preserve the rights we’ve fought so hard to have. We also must maintain our professional dignity and self-respect while keeping our husbands in our homes and our children on the right track.

Business owners like Karren Brady and Jessica Herrin are mentoring women into more flexible employment scenarios that enable them to build businesses of their own, on their terms.  In a recent interview, Ms. Brady explains how Avon is opening doors for women who want to have both career and family — “Avon Representatives are all self-employed entrepreneurs and many are mothers who have opted to run their own businesses in order to give them the flexibility to balance a career with family commitments.”

Getting ready for the big top –

These examples are proof that what women always knew was possible, is within their grasp if they reach out and take it.  If you are looking for the courage to take that leap or  desire to become a more skilled juggler, here are my top 3 tips:

  • Clarify your goals and values for your home/work life, and reflect on them regularly to keep you on track.
  • When confronted with requests that stretch you beyond your limits, be brave enough to just say “no.”
  • And don’t be opposed to enlisting your partner or friends to help you keep all your balls in the air when you need an extra set of hands.

If you have tips that have helped you become an expert juggler I hope you will post a comment and let me know.  I’d love to hear from you.
