The 30 Day Refresh-Her Challenge – Ques #3

Dreams are great, but without structure, they won’t get you anywhere. Creating a vision for your business is a necessity in order to know where you want to go. Unfortunately, entrepreneurs can fall into the trap of generating neat and tidy visions that don’t exceed the boundaries of their comfort zone.

My question is —

Are YOU feeling stretched by your vision?

Mistake #3 – If you spent time enlarging your vision, but did not get really uncomfortable in the process, then you are thinking way too small.

If your desire is to keep your business small and stagnant, then stick with a vision you can fit in a matchbox. But most entrepreneurs are in business to push the envelope, and never want to put a lid on what they can achieve. There’s a big difference between surviving and thriving — the choice is completely up to you.

You could take the comfortable and safe route, but the reality is that small thinking will only lead to small results.

But there’s a solution…

Transparency is a Gift

Experience is one of the most valuable assets in business. Think about how much you rely on the things you’ve learned through the good, bad, and even ugly times. Every late night, early morning, stumble, victory, tear or bead of sweat has value — they are gifts. The lessons you take away from your experiences are the forces that guide you into the future.

Your experiences are as unique as you are. No two are alike, nor can they be replicated. The greatest thing about them is that they keep on coming every day.

But all this value is wasted if you keep it to yourself.

No matter what business you are in, you are in a position to mentor others. You are faced with continuous opportunities to share wisdom with those around you — clients, employees, students, peers, and family. Teachable moments are all around you, and yet, many times you let them just pass you by. Excuses are easy. Investing in others is the real work.

Sharing is something that women typically do with more ease than men, because they are wired to connect on deeper levels. But when it comes to business, female entrepreneurs are not always as open about the paths they’ve journeyed. Failure has become a dirty word that women don’t like to talk about. In business, it is equated with weakness or lack of ability. But failure is par for the course for both genders, and is wasted when hidden from view.

How transparent are you?

It’s time for women to quit holding back when it comes to talking about their professional experiences. Victories are so much sweeter, and challenges are so much easier when shared with others. But before you open the floodgates, let’s take a look at what true transparency means.

Transparency is not singing about your achy-breaky heart, airing your dirty laundry, or venting. It’s about sharing the valuable take-aways from your best experiences. Being authentic and honest when it comes to your victories and your mistakes is one of the most valuable gifts you can give to others. It may not only help them avoid some of the stumbles you encountered, but can give them greater options to face the ones they can’t avoid.

In a recent guest post I quoted Dr. Brené Brown (@BreneBrown), who said that the original definition of courage is “to tell a story of who you are with your whole heart.” And it takes courage and a level of vulnerability to share your story with your audience, whether one person or a thousand.

As we near the end of another year, filled with a myriad experiences, I challenge you to consider sharing more and not losing sight of the teachable moments you encounter each day. Give the gift of transparency to those within your circle of influence. You’ll never know how much you have to gain from the experience of whole-heartedly sharing with others until you get out there try it.

The 30 Day Refresh-Her Challenge – Ques #2

You may have made many great strides in your business so far, and for that you should be very proud. But how many times did feel like you got a little off track, hesitated to make a move, or talked yourself out of something because you gave your fear a bit too much attention?

My question is —

Are YOU in control of what goes on between your ears?

Mistake #2 – If all your preparation did not include steps to tackle your greatest and most illusive obstacles, then you will be in for a bumpy ride.

Even the most successful businesswomen are in a constant battle to control the noise, distractions, internal dialog and imagined fear that is generated in their minds. The smallest unmanaged thought can wreak havoc, especially when the pressure is on.

Most entrepreneurs mistakenly believe that they have it all under control, and others have no clue how to effectively reign in their brain. It’s not a skill that is easily or quickly learned.

But there’s a solution…

Tip of the Week – Dec 22, 2010

Finding freedom, especially during the busy holiday season begins by having the courage to say one word — No.  Don’t be someone else’s doormat to be nice and sacrifice your values in the process.

The 30 Day Refresh-Her Challenge – Ques #1

The New Year is just days away, are you ready to take 2011 by storm?

Like most business owners, I’m sure you’ve spent a great deal of time and effort revising your business plan to drive growth in the coming year. You’ve probably looked back over 2010 in detail:

  • Reviewed your financials, to set new sales goals
  • Determined where marketing and advertising campaigns need to be adjusted
  • Summarized lessons learned from moves that just didn’t turn out the way you’d planned
  • Examined your social media metrics
  • Thought about developing and releasing new products and services
  • And the list goes on…

Needless to say, you’ve accomplished a lot and probably believe that you’ve laid out a pretty solid plan.

But my question is —

Are YOU in that plan?

Mistake #1 – If your Business Plan did not begin and end with YOU in mind, then you’ve really missed the boat!

Yes, you are the Captain of the ship. You are leader and mentor, building an ever-increasing bench of talent to sustain the expansion of your business. You may be spouse, partner and/or parent too. But all of these are the roles you play, the hats you wear, and where you invest yourself on a daily basis.

Think about how meticulously you plan and track when it comes to making financial investments. What’s with all the intensity? Obviously, your goal is for financial investments to have a high rate of return. That’s a no brainer. Why should self-care be any different?

So often, entrepreneurs completely forget that they are not an endless source of inspiration, motivation, energy, brilliance, words, plans, or smiles. That’s why so many quickly find their fuel tanks running on empty before they’ve even gotten halfway around the track.

But there’s a solution…

5 Tips to Keep Your Head Above Water with Social Media

Staying afloat - inter tube in water

There are so many different avenues when it comes to social media, and for someone just getting her feet wet, it can really seem daunting.  That’s when you call on an expert, like Laura Click of Blue Kite Marketing, who can bring it all down to size.  If you haven’t dipped your toes in the social media waters, this guest post will give you the courage and steps you need.  Thanks, Laura!

Facebook. Twitter, YouTube. LinkedIn. Oh my! It’s certainly enough to make your head spin. Although social media offers considerable value to small businesses, it can be challenging to make sense of it all – especially while juggling everything it takes to run a successful business.

It can be very easy to get overwhelmed with social media even before you dive in. And, once you do, it can quickly consume your time and prevent you from doing the other necessary tasks to build your build your business.

So, how do you make sense of it all and keep your head above water? Although there’s not one simple answer, there are steps you can take to make sure social media doesn’t get the best of you.

Whether you’re still deciding to take the social media plunge or already knee deep in the social media pool, here are a few tips to keep you from drowning:

1. Determine your goals. Social media is much more than posting status updates and sharing pictures. The various tools can be used a number of powerful ways to boost your business – build your network of contacts, engage customers, offer customer support and drive traffic to your blog or website. To get the most out of your social media efforts, you need to decide what you are there to accomplish. If you’re not sure, pick one small goal to get started and work on that before adding more to it. This will help you keep your effort targeted and manageable.

2. Set expectations. Although social media can be used to expand your network and drive sales, don’t expect people to be beating your door down overnight. Just like any other marketing effort, social media is not a magic bullet. It’s something that takes time, effort and patience to develop. Make sure you are realistic with your expectations, especially at first. If you stick with it, you will see results over time.

3. Master one network at a time. So often, businesses are quick to open up profiles on every social network out there and then let them sit dormant because they don’t know what to do with them. No one says you have to use every social network. Pick the one that best meets the need of your business. Find out where your customers are and start there. Then, learn out how to best leverage that network for your business. If you need help, hire an expert, read some blogs or seek advice from peers. Whatever you do, take the time to learn how to use the tools so your efforts won’t be wasted.

4. Make it part of your routine. To truly get the most out of social media, you should incorporate it into your daily routine. The more you use it, the sooner you will get the hang of it and start to see results for your business.

5. Schedule your efforts. One of the challenges with social media is that it can be a huge time suck. Don’t let it. Schedule time every day and stick to it. For instance, you could concentrate on one task in the morning (i.e. share articles, find new people to connect with, answer comments) and focus on another in the afternoon. If you build a schedule and use your time accordingly, it will make your efforts more manageable and will help you stay on track.

What is your biggest challenge with social media? Do you get overwhelmed when trying to figure social media out? Share your thoughts in the comments and we’ll work through it together!
